Thyroid Disease

The thyroid gland is located in the base of the neck on both sides of the lower part of the arynx (voice box) and is shaped like a butterfly. It produces thyroid hormone in response to stimulation by a hormone from the pituitary gland. The thyroid hormone acts throughout the body to regulate metabolism.

Underproduction or overproduction of the thyroid hormone can bring along rapid hair loss; and is one of the main identifying symptoms of that disease.
