Post Pregnancy

Many women will experience a sudden onset of rapid hair loss two to four months after giving birth. Usually, a hair follicle will produce new hair for three to four months, then rest for three to four months. During this ‘rest mode’, old hair falls out to make room for new growth.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes drastically reduce the hair follicle rest periods, but some women can have up to 30% of their hair follicles turn to rest mode at one time, which leads to sudden and dramatic hair loss. For most women, increased hair loss will last for three to six weeks. However, in extreme cases it can take a year for hair loss patterns to return to normal.
